As Georgia’s scorching summer heat and humidity give way to cooler days, there’s an inviting call to step outside. Whether you’re winding down after a long workday or seeking a break from your daily routine, the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) unveils a world of outdoor activities.
As the weather cools down, we invite you to explore some of the most notorious trails around town. Whether you want to relax after a long day at work, plan for a weekend picnic, or simply workout outdoors, Augusta has the place for you.
The list of parks and trails is extensive. In this post we will highlight just four centrally located trails that are multifunctional and scenic.
Savannah Rapids Park - The Locks¶

Nestled between the Savannah River adn the Canal, Savannah Rapids Park is probably one of the most popular parks in the area. Here, the setting is as charming as it gets. The walking trails are wide allowing enough room for runners, walkers, pets, and bikers alike.
Whether you prefer a leisurely or power walk, this park caters to all. At the trailhead, a stunning river view where you can birdwatch or just enjoy the sound of rushing waters.
The wide dirt trail ensures a comfortable walk without feeling crowded, making it accessible to all.
However, be mindful of a few factors. The trails here are unpaved and, in some locations, uneven. Be prepared to deviate from mud puddles after a rainy day.
As you explore, keep an eye out for the local wildlife; encounters with snakes and sightings of gators in the water are not uncommon.
Augusta Riverwalk¶
In the heart of downtown, the Riverwalk Parkway has long been the city’s pearl and one of the hottest tourist attractions. If you come on a Saturday morning during the warmer months, you can stroll through the Saturday Market.
The park is a beloved destination for those wanting to enjoy a expansive view of the Savannah River. This park offers a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, complete with a smoothly paved trail that hugs the riverfront, inviting leisurely strolls, brisk jogs, and scenic bike rides.

As you navigate the trail, you will be captivated by the panoramic beauty of the majestic Savannah River. Early mornings are exceptionally beautiful as you can watch the sunrise. It’s the perfect blend of nature and urban vibe.
While you enjoy a walk along the river, don’t forget to visit the pedestrian bridge. The Jefferson Davis Memorial Bridge leads to iconic views of downtown.
Aqueduct Park¶

Located right in the heart of Augusta, Aqueduct Park offers a delightful escape into nature. It has paved walking paths that invite you to explore its surroundings. As you wander, you’ll notice some of these paths leading alongside the Riverwatch Parkway. So, it could be busy depending on the time of day. But fear not, it soon transform into a beautiful route that guides you to the riverbanks, treating you to a breathtaking view of the water’s edge.
If you follow it long enough, and cross 13th street, it connects with the Riverwalk Parkway, creating a continuous 6.5-mile round-trip journey (including the Riverwalk). It is excellent for biking.
So, whether you seek a short, peaceful walk or an extended riverside adventure, Aqueduct Park promises a perfect outdoor escape right in the heart of Augusta.
Euchee Creek Greenway¶
This list would not be complete without the mention of Euchee Creek Greenway. Embracing Patriot’s park, this is Columbia County’s premier location for walking, running, and cycling.
Stretching to 4.2 miles, it joins with other well-known trails, Canterbury Farms and Bartram Trail, creating an impressive network of trails. It can be accessed at Patriot’s Park or from the Canterbury Farms neighborhood.
The paved trail is wide allowing enough space for walkers and bikers. It is dog and kid friendly. Benches are spread throughout in case you want to rest before continuing your exercises.
Conclusion¶
This is just a very short list of the most picturesque parks and walking trails surrounding the Augusta area. Each of them is worth going into and checking it out.
My favorite, hands down, is Riverwatch Parkway. On the bank of the river, this park is the postal card of the city.
